I can confidently claim that I make this one simple dish better than my mom!
- In the plastic bowl use like half of the bowl for rava
- 6 chillies
- 1.5 red onion
- Same quantity of vegetables as onions
- 5 spoons of tiny spoon salt
Ingredients
- Rava
- Onion : 1/2 American Onion
- Green Chilly : 4 (deseeded)
- Red Chilly : 2 (dry)
- Tomato : 1 (deseeded)
- Beans : 7
- Baby Carrots : 6
- Green Peas : 1 Tablespoon
- Coriander
- Cumin : 1 Teaspoon
- Coriander+Cumin Powder : 1/2 teaspoon
- Cinnamon : 1/8 teaspoon (powder)
- Mustard Seeds : 5 (I know it’s less, but 🤷♀️)
- Turmeric : 1/2 teaspoon
Instructions
- Heat about 2 Tablespoon of oil in a pan
- Add very few (4 or 5) mustard seeds and wait for them to crackle
- Add cumin, red chillies and green chillies and saute for 30s and then add the coriander+cumin powder and cinnamon
- Add the finely chopped onion and saute for 2 minutes
- Add the carrots, beans and tomato and saute for 2 minutes
- Add water, peas, and turmeric. Then let it come to boil and boil for 2 minutes
- Set the stove to a minimum flame and slowly add rava while stirring. NOTE: Feel the viscosity and stop adding rava when it becomes thick
- Stir until upma until it is the final expected consistency
- Finally add coriander to garnish and optionally some lemon zest.
Tips
Upma tastes best with some Kara Boondhi (see picture) 😊
